On three separate days this July, invisible and odorless gases will be released in subway stations and at street level in all five boroughs of New York City. But officials in the New York Police Department will not be alarmed — it was their idea.

The gases, known asperfluorocarbons, will be dispersed to study how airborne toxins would flow through the city after a terrorist attack or an accidental spill of hazardous chemicals, the department said on Wednesday.

Researchers supervised by the Brookhaven National Laboratory will use about 200 monitors to trace the paths of the gases they release. The police intend to use the information gathered in the test, which they said would be the biggest such urban airflow study, to hone their plans for emergency responses. Read more »

The Linux operating system is one of the most well-respect open-source OS’ on the planet and now it’s going to war – literally.

The team at Tracking Point have implemented Linux in an attempt to create firearms with more precision. The goal was simple, create firearms that could be more accurate from long distances.

First shown off at CES 2013, the company implements a combination of ARM CPUs, lasers, and on-board Wi-Fi to determine  shooting accuracy. That combined information allows hunters and other armed individuals to increase their distance for accuracy.

The company claims that hunters with a normal range of 200 to 300 yards are often comfortable shooting with accuracy from double and even triple those distances. Read more »

It used to be a favorite pastime of the establishment media and its snobbish intelligentsia to poke fun at the “black helicopter crowd,” who they dismissively wrote off as loons and conspiracy nuts. More recently, the Department of Southern Poverty Security has insisted most of them are white racists bent on destroying the country.

Now that the Pentagon and the feds have stepped up their effort to militarize state and local law enforcement and conduct in-your-face military operations at civilian airports in the dead of night and stage mock strafing of civilian trafficin populated urban centers, more and more people are seeing what was not long ago a snickering pejorative for scriptwriters with degrees from the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard.
