After the strange events of June 23, 2010 in Southern Ontario should give you enough reason to be prepared. Yesterday at about 1:45 pm a 5.0 earthquake hit just outside of Ottawa. I felt the 30 second long tremor for just out side of Toronto. Thankfully there was no loss of life and very little damage done. Were you prepared for the earthquake yesterday? I came without warning. What would happen if it had caused damage to your home. Would you have a backup plan to lessen the stress on your family. This is why you should have a BOB prepared and ea sly assessable, because if you feel the earth rumble get out of your house if you can.
Also yesterday without warning a tornado hit in the Midland area of Ontario. Destroying house and business. Lot of people say you can’t prepare for such disasters. I would beg to differ. If you have an emergency plan in place and a BOB at least you would have a chance.
The first thing I do to prepare for unexpected disaster is to know the multitude of possible disasters that could hit where I live in Southern Ontario and can face these following situations:
- Ice Storms
- Social Unrest
- Train Derailment
- Chemical Spills
- and many others
After considering the possible situations I think of any of these is to look and think how each one might happen. I then use mental conditioning, I look at it like an athlete uses mental imaging and practice to win at their particular sport. Survival is no different. Think of situation will shorten you reaction time where mere seconds can make the difference between life and death. My main goal is to become mentally prepared so I am calm in any of these situations. Remember you can’t help yourself or your family if you panic and have a mental break down. Stay calm at all cost. If you know the risks and dangers of these situation then you will be ready.
The second step is to prepare a plan for you and your family. Write it down discuss it and practice the plan so everyone knows what to do. Next prepare a BOB / Shelter in place kit. Make sure everyone in you house know where it is. This is where the weight of the bag is important. You don’t want it to heavy that most people can’t lift or carry it.
